Fr. Quang has most recently been serving as vocation director for his community, Priests of the Sacred Heart. He has been living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and is excited to return to Houston. He served as associate pastor for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Houston from 2000-2005. He holds a PhD in Economics and Political Science from Claremont Graduate University in California.
We are excited to welcome Fr. Quang to the UH Catholic Community! He will begin in January 2023.
My name is Quang A. Nguyen, SCJ. I am a member of the Priests of the Sacred Heart – a worldwide missionary congregation founded in France by the Venerable Fr. Leo John Dehon in 1878. I am the fourth child in a family of eight siblings. One of my younger brothers also is a Jesuit Priest of the Western Province.
I have a B.A in psychology, a M.Div in religious studies, an M.A in neoclassical economics, and I earned my Ph.D. in Economics and Political Science in December, 2013. I also have a number of business and accounting credits in the MBA program from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas.
As a religious, I have been in vows with the Priests of the Sacred Heart for the last twenty eight years, and have been a priest for twenty three years. I have ministered in various parishes in Texas, New York, and California. I have had the privilege of ministering with people from all walks of life, and of all ages. I have offered workshops and lectures to various religious groups regarding the contemporary social-economic challenges and opportunities.
I have served my community as both a Vice-Provincial Superior and also as the local superior. I have also worked as a math teacher and served as a teaching assistant at Fordham University in “math for economists,” micro-economics, and economic development for graduate students. I try to stay current with the economic trends and challenges that confront society daily.
Currently, I am the vocation director for our US Province. In my ministry, I am trying to accompany young people in their discernment through priesthood, religious life, or service to the church. I hope that these young people will be able to minimize the “negative externalities” of their decisions.
I look forward to ministering with our students at U of H as their chaplain. I am grateful for the opportunity, and I hope to contribute to their growth in faith.
