On the solemnity of the Annunciation, Wednesday morning, March 25, 2020, Fr. Carl Trutter, O.P. passed away peacefully at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center in New Orleans. He had been in residence there for the last several years due to declining health. Fr. Carl is one of the major figures in the history of the Catholic Newman Center at the University of Houston, where he served as chaplain and director from 1977 to 1983. In addition, Fr. Carl served as Director of Campus Ministry for the Diocese of Galveston - Houston from 1978 to 1983.
Fr. Carl was one of the early national leaders in the field of campus ministry for the Catholic Church in the United States. Serving at the University of Houston was always a pride and joy for Fr. Carl in his long and storied history of service as a priest and preacher of Christ in the Dominican tradition.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a private funeral and burial for Fr. Carl were held on March 31st. He was buried in the Dominican Friars Cemetery in Rosaryville, Louisiana. A public Memorial Mass for Fr. Carl will be held on
TBD. As we mourn Fr. Carl's passing during this challenging time, let us remain united in prayer to Christ the Healer and implore the maternal care of our Blessed Mother. May the soul of Fr. Carl and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
